Back in 1998, I was the night DJ at T95 in Wichita, Kansas, from 6 PM until midnight. One day, the station's engineer announced he needed to shut us down at 11 PM for maintenance. I asked him to wait till Midnight because I didn’t want my show messed with. He refused.
So, my friend Brent and I came up with a plan.
Starting early in the evening, Brent started calling in dropping cryptic and increasingly chilling threats live on-air. At first, it was vague: “I’m watching you.” But as the night went on, the calls grew darker, with him describing exactly what he planned to do when he "got to me." Listeners were hooked, the tension rising with each call. He and I refer to him as “The Killer”.
The grand finale came at 10:56 PM. “The Killer”, in his eeriest voice, called in one last time. "I’m next door, And I’m coming to get you." And he hung up.
After a few mins of a Nine Inch Nails song… static……..
By 11:03 PM, the building was surrounded by police. This bit had gone so far beyond what we expected.
The next morning, I got called into an 8:30 AM meeting. Let’s just say, the management team was not laughing. I got screamed at like never before. I was told to "NEVER MENTION THIS ON THE AIR" and to “LOSE THE TAPE”. It was worth it.
