Welcome to Week 8 of the Native Noise Nudgecast. We hit a milestone this week, Native Noise has received & added over 100 new songs into our library. That means we are averaging over 12 new songs a week since I’ve taken over. The response here is crazy, from all aspects of rock. I’ve received death metal tracks, christian rock, southern rock, pop-rock, punk, hard rock, metal, grunge, alt rock and everything in-between. Thank you so much for your support and all you’ve done to help Native Noise and myself out. From sharing these weekly Nudgecasts to tagging bands and giving them a nudge to get new music WEBN’s way. Local rock is alive and well within the Tri-state. This community is growing and I’d love your input on anything you feel. NATIVE NOISE SPOTLIGHT ARTIST OF THE WEEK
Motel Faces is a pompous and loud, sleazy and proud rock band from the queen city who began in late 2014. You can’t really pigeonhole their sound into a particular genre. They incorporate a variety of rock styles. The band has gone through various lineup changes, just adding a new bassist to make Motel Faces a four piece. The band officially announces their new bassist & full member , Tyler Wichus, joining CODY, JOHN & MATT
When it comes to new music, motel faces release a track at a time instead of doing an album or EP. eventually they’ll release them as a collection for you to pick up at shows.
On the Facebook page for Motel Faces you guys promote the fact you're about being pompous and loud, sleazy and proud. Just how sleazy are you guys with your music as well as your live show?
Our live show comes from a different mindset than I think any of us had as little as a year or two ago. We're finally at the point where we're good, and we know that we're good. And to someone unfamiliar with our material or the full aspect of what exactly makes Motel Faces tick, it might come off as cocky or just plain arrogant. But then again, we wouldn't say those are incorrect assumptions. The sleazy part just comes along with what we've already noticed people say about us: "they get drunk, they play rock, they talk about sex."
The band is all over the place musically, taking parts and pieces from a wide variety of rock styles. How hard is it to incorporate all those styles into the songwriting?
That's never been an issue for us, primarily because we've never tried to force a genre or sound. We play the kind of stuff we want to hear, and when you do that songwriting is a breeze. We do our best to keep an open mind, for example in one of our upcoming singles "Tapped Out," we were just jamming on a punk riff one day and John mentioned throwing in a groovy spaced out bridge, and we couldn't be happier with that song now. By not trying to put each song into one box and letting everyone have creative control over their parts, you never have to worry about sounding repetitive. Which is one of the reasons why we hate when people try to pigeon hole us in a genre. We are what we are, rock.
Motel Faces has an interesting way of releasing music, instead of doing albums and EPs the band releases one tune at a time. What made you go this route & how successful has this approach been?
The "business" side of music is nothing like it was 10 years ago. Hell, not even like it was 5 years ago. There is a limited amount of attention span, which means regardless of dropping a single or an EP, you'll have everyone's ears for the same amount of time. We've somewhat stolen this thought process from many American hip hop/R&B artists. We still record all our songs in one session, so they all have a similar warmth and atmosphere, but instead of dropping them all off at once and people listening for a couple weeks, we slip one at a time and promote the hell out of it. That way we are able to garner attention for 2-3 months out of one day in the studio. It also helps us to space out writing and set performance, as we've gotten more and more ostentatious on stage, the extra free time to prepare has done wonders.
Matt wasn’t the original drummer, you recruited him using Craigslist. Typically weird and odd stuff happens when you’re looking for someone on Craigslist. Anyone crazy apply for the gig and how did Matt stand out?
Ohhh yes. Craigslist can definitely be rough. We were, however, lucky enough that Matt was actually the first person to try out for the role. We'd lost our current drummer and had 3-4 shows less than 2 weeks away, and the bassist we had at the time was so stuck on him and his more round, behind-the-beat, heavy handed style that we decided to lock him in. We had four or five other people in queue, but were so happy with Matty we couldn't even entertain the thought of having someone else in his spot.
A few of your tunes build towards a big climax accompanied by a guitar solo. When you play live do you jam these tracks out or play them as recorded?
Guitar has always been an essential part of this band. Cody and I are ridiculously competitive about creating new riffs or leads for everything we write. So a lot of core parts are very rehearsed. But honestly it depends on the song. Some tracks are very much written to allow the mood and that very night to dictate exactly what happens. We're big on more drawn out jams at live shows, which is something we feel you seldom get anywhere else in modern original rock music. Its certainly dangerous going in without a plan, but its just one of those "high risk for high reward" scenarios. But it certainly keeps it personal. The version of "Cincy Queen" you hear at a show one night will be totally unique from the one we play the next night somewhere else. And that should make you feel special.
What should one expect when it comes to catching Motel Faces live?
Sweat. Tequila. Ringing ears that last at least a few days. Really just a big, big rock show on a small local band budget. We work with what we have and leave everything on the stage or in your face. To top it off, we recently added a new bassist, so we're back as a full force 4 piece band. Probably should take this opportunity to officially announce our new member, Tyler Wichus. Check him out, but him a beer next time you see us out. He's certainly the cool guy in our outfit now.
Anything else we should know or prepare for when it comes to this band?
We'll be playing the main stage at Bogart's on April 1st, with the fabulous Thunderstuck. Those guys never fail to sell out a venue so it should be huge. Needless to say we're ecstatic. Besides that, we've got a few more tracks to release thing Spring, and we may or may not have just recorded a live EP... But thats the newest for us. We finally got a large enough van to travel more so we'll be all over the region these coming months. Come out, let us pour into you. Have a good time. Feel sexy. And don't forget to come up and talk to us. We love you all, and every single one of you is the reason we keep this thing rolling, all the way till the wheels fall off.
You can also catch them tonight (March 31st) @ Old Crow Bar
