NATIVE NOISE NUDGECAST FEBRUARY 26TH EDITION

This week started off amazingly in our hunt to track down the best bands right here in the Tri-State.  I came into work Tuesday and had 7 new songs in my inbox as well as 3 news songs left over from last week which we didn’t have enough time to get to.  On average there are only 12 to 14 songs that make it in the hour show.  This week features all new bands who have never been played on the show except for our Spotlight Artist of the Week “The Grove.”

AGAIN… if you are in a band and want to be featured on the local show Native Noise Sunday nights on WEBN all you have to do is send me a link to one of your songs you have uploaded in .WAVE format to dropbox or google.  Email that link to Nudge@Webn.com.  Also please reach out to me in one way or another and give me your feedback from the Nudgecast & from Native Noise.  I have some cool things I am looking to do but I need to know what you think and what you are willing to support.  Do you want a longer Nudgecast full of interviews from bands?  Do you like the format I’ve got going?  Do you want me to dive even deeper into the bands I’m playing w/ updates, albums and tid bits I don’t have to mention on the show.  PLEASE let me know, this show and Nudgecast is FOR YOU.

NATIVE NOISE SPOTLIGHT ARTIST OF THE WEEK: THE GROVE

The Grove’s origin started out in the band SomeDaze with Guitar & vocalist Adam Forsthofel & Drummer Jeff Voegele.  SomeDaze was not only gaining steam around the Tri-State but Adam made a name for himself as a guitar phenom being invited to play The National Anthem at reds games multiple times and often made the rounds in the media showing off his axe skills.

Adam & Jeff went off to college together putting an end to SomeDaze.  The duo attended the Ohio University where they continued playing music together.  There they lived off Grosventor Street and dubbed their practice space “THE GROVE.”  New band members joined them and THE GROVE officially formed.  After graduation the duo moved back home, recruited Matt Holt on bass & backup vocals and Adam’s brother Matt Forsthoefel on keyboards as well as backup vocals.  So far the band put out two full length albums and in January of this year released the EP Coming To Terms.

My Interview w/ Adam from The Grove:

How would you describe your sound?

It's funny you ask because two years ago I would have described it completely differently. It seems to be ever changing. Currently however, I think we are jamming more and gelling more as a band. We are trading solos more as well and highlighting all members of the band. The best way to describe it is that we are a Rock Band that draws influences from everywhere and it clearly shows.

Your music is unique and seems to pull from a wide range of influences, who are your influences as a band?

We love a lot of different music. A lot of my guitar playing is very blues influenced and that's how I really got started. Artists such as Stevie Ray Vaughn and Jimmy Paige convinced me to pick up the guitar. Matt listens to a lot of indie bands actually. He loves bands like the Shins for example. Jeff and I share a love for the Red Hot Chili Peppers and Incubus. Lately however, we have been listening a lot to Jam Bands and I think the new music has been showing that. Before

The Grove become what it is today, you guys went by a different name.  What changed from when you went from SomeDaze to The Grove?

Well one thing was that we had a lot of member changes. The only members from SomeDaze that are in The Grove now are Jeff and Me. Also, The Grove was based on the street we lived on in College. We decided to go in a new direction and felt a new name would be a great thing as well.

You guys have been through a few lineup changes, what’s the hardest thing about recruiting new members?

I would say getting the new members to really gel with us. We can always manage to get songs down and deliver them well, but when we get steady members, we start to get entire shows down better from start to finish. We focus more on transitioning between songs and how to work with the audience better. Overall, we have been lucky to find so many great musicians that have wanted to be a part of The Grove.

The founding members went off to college enrolling at Ohio University, that area is known for its wild parties & beer drinking.  How does Athens compare to Cinci for the local music scene?

What’s a cool band story where things went insanely wild out there? To be honest it was pretty crazy. I miss those days a lot! Athens is a different scene. We'd play more house parties and always put our gear at risk. All for the price of getting paid just a case of beer haha. But to be honest we had so much fun playing in college but it we were a lot less professional at times. It was more about just partying and playing. But people went crazy at those shows. A lot of stories consist of us playing until we literally could not play any longer haha. Whether it be we had too much to drink, the cops shut us down, or the party just got too out of hand and our gear was going to be broken. But sometimes, we'd also land some very interesting and crazy opportunities. For example, one show we played was in the middle of a country barn for a party and a Charter Bus Picked us up for it. We felt like real rock stars loading our band gear on this huge charter bus driving out into the middle of the woods to play at this unknown location.Back in January The Grove released a 4 song EP “Coming to Terms.”

How did you go about raising funds to make this EP?

To be honest, we saved up a lot from shows but also chipped in our own personal funds. We find it's all worth it to pay for something that you love. This might sound crazy but I'd rather have a new CD then some new piece of music equipment or TV or something. There's a lot of pride that goes into having your own professionally recorded music.

Any plans in place to do a full length album, your last came out in 2015?

I would love to do another full length album and to be honest at the rate we are still writing new music, we'd have no problem doing that. It all comes down to if we can afford it. No matter what, I'd like to put another Live Album together showcasing some of our new stuff. Hopefully people keep coming to our shows and supporting us so we can get the funds for another album!

As a local band, how do you feel about streaming your music for free on apps like Spotify?

Overall I don't mind it since it's great exposure and my finds don't solely rely on playing music. It would be nice to record music and make actual money off of it, but at the same time, I want to get the songs we wrote out to as many listeners as possible.

You guys have a big fundraiser coming up next week, the 2nd annual Rock n’ revival for a Cure @ Southgate House March 4th.  Tell us about how you guys started this and what cure the proceeds are going for.

This event all started around when My Father got diagnosed with Brain Cancer. He unfortunately was diagnosed with a form of cancer that does not have a known Cure and it took me by surprise. I put together this event to bring for awareness for Cancers like this and in order to raise money for Brain Tumor Research. The Southgate House Revival has always been great to us and were willing to let us use their venue for putting this together (thanks again SGHR). All proceeds will go to the UC Health Brain Tumor Foundation. Specifically, money will be donated to researching a cure for Glioblastoma (Stage 4 Brain Cancer). This is what my Father was diagnosed with and unfortunately passed away from. I came up with the idea when all doctors we discussed with told us that there currently is no known cure and that we were given very limited time. Other than the Brain Tumor, my father was perfectly healthy at age 54 and this is a common diagnoses with Glioblastoma. This was very tough to come to terms with (Hint on where we got the EP Name). I also thought about how there isn't enough awareness and support for this cancer. A cancer without a real fighting chance is a very difficult thing to deal with or even grasp the fact that a cancer like that exists. I still don't think people are fully aware that cancers like this happen to people. I put this struggle into something positive and that was this event and my music. I pitched the idea to The Southgate House Revival and they have been nothing but supportive on this. I am glad to say it's been the same for all of the bands in the Cincinnati Music Scene and the sponsors willing to step up. I simply reached out to bands and sponsors and put it together based on the interest of others.
