Mystery Lung Illness affecting E-Cigarette smokers and Vapers

A mysterious respiratory illness has swept the nation and there is one common thread in the more than 400 cases, including 6 deaths - use of vapes or e-cigarettes. State and federal health authorities are focusing on the role of contaminants or counterfeit substances as a likely cause of vaping-related lung illnesses — now up to at least 450 possible cases in 33 states. One potential lead is the oil derived from vitamin E, known as vitamin E acetate. Investigators at the U.S. Food and Drug Administration found the oil in cannabis products in samples collected from patients who fell ill across the United States.

Vitamin E is found naturally in certain foods(canola oil, olive oil..almonds). The oil derived from the vitamin is commonly available as a nutritional supplement and is used in topical skin treatments. It is not known to cause harm when ingested as a vitamin supplement or applied to the skin. But, its molecular structure could make it hazardous when inhaled, and officials said it could be associated with the kinds of respiratory symptoms that many patients have reported: cough, shortness of breath and chest pain.

For now, all should stop use of e-cigarettes and vapes until the exact cause of this illness is figured out.
