Hinder's Drummer 'Almost Got Beat Up' By Nickelback Frontman Chad Kroeger

When Hinder was getting their start, they had the opportunity to tour with Nickelback. It would be a dream come true, except that drummer Cody Hanson pissed off Nickeback's frontman Chad Kroeger and "almost got beat up."

Hanson recalled the story on a recent episode of The Jesea Lee Show when asked if he'd ever experienced any "super cringey" moments with other bands.

“In the early days, we were out touring with Nickelback, and we always loved Nickelback growing up, one of our favorite bands,” he began. “We’d kind of become buddies with them. We spent a couple summers recording in Vancouver, one of the summers was at Chad Kroeger’s house, so we kinda knew the guys.”

“One night … we were sitting outside of a hotel, and it was us and our crew, and Chad and a couple of girls. They were like these country girls sitting in back of their trucks, and they start talking about horses," Hanson remembered. "And my drum tech at the time, he starts laughing, he’s like, “Cody, man, come here, Chad says there’s no such thing as quarter horses,’ and he’s laughing, kinda poking fun at him.”

“So, I think to myself, maybe ’cause he’s Canadian and they use the metric system, so everybody starts laughing. I wasn’t trying to be a dick," he explained, but Kroeger didn't like the comment. "He comes over and wraps his arm around my neck, and I think he’s joking, right? And then I notice he starts really squeezing … so I kinda shove him off and am like, 'What the f**k are you doing, dude?' And he’s like, 'If you wanna make a person from Canada mad, the first thing you do is call him a Canadian.'”

The singer then stormed off with his “massive security guard,” but Hanson was so mad that he followed him to the tour bus. “I’m so mad at this point and so upset," he said. "I’m yelling at him. He’s yelling at me.”

But when he did confront Kroeger, all that came out was tears. “Being drunk, once you get so mad, your emotions overtake you. I started crying like a little b***h. … I was so embarrassed,” Hanson divulged.

“So, that’s the time I almost got beat up by Chad Kroeger, and his bodyguard, and I cried,” Hanson concluded his story.

Elsewhere in the interview, Hanson discussed the popularity of Hinder's 2006 hit "Lips of an Angel" and opened up about the possibility of the band reuniting with their original singer Austin Winkler. The band's currently on tour and has dates slated for 2025, too. Watch the whole interview and check out a full list of tour dates below.
