Diver Swims To Greet "Friendly" Shark, Immediately Regrets It

I'll take decisions I will quickly regret for $500, Alex! This diver has probably done something similar in the past, it's the only way I can rationalize his confidence to swim right at a shark.

The diver was under the impression that the shark he's approaching is a friendly basking shark, the second largest species of living shark. They are known to be "tolerant of boats and divers approaching it, and may even circle divers, making it an important draw for dive tourism in areas where it is common."

However, the diver immediately turn back and yells out "that was a bad idea!" He then makes a b-line back to boat as the shark looks to want a closer look. His buddy on the boat trying not to freak him out as he tries to get out of the water. So what was that shark, a great white?

Apparently, basking and great white sharks are very similar in size and are often mistaken for one another. The internet seems confident that this was a basking shark, the diver just got spooked and didn't want to take chances. I mean, would you?
